FAQs

Woven

  • Woven is a national network focused on creating safe, affordable, and community-centered living options for women. Woven supports women who value both independence and connection by offering education, resources, and hands-on development support to help intentional communities take shape.

Woven is grounded in dignity, belonging, and the belief that everyone deserves safe, supportive community.

  • Woven supports women across all stages of life who value community, safety, and connection. While Woven is intentionally inclusive, it was created in response to a large and growing population of women over the age of 55 who often lack traditional support systems. Many are solo agers and part of the “missing middle” — unable to afford high-cost new construction cohousing or senior living, yet not eligible for subsidized housing. Woven exists to help create attainable, community-based living options that support women as their needs evolve over time.

  • A solo ager is someone who is aging without a traditional support system such as a spouse, partner, or nearby family. Solo agers often plan intentionally for their future, valuing independence while also recognizing the importance of community, connection, and mutual support as they age. Many women today identify as solo agers, whether by choice or circumstance.

  • The “missing middle” refers to people who fall between traditional housing options. They may earn too much to qualify for subsidized or income-restricted housing, yet cannot afford high-cost new construction cohousing, senior living, or market-rate housing designed for aging adults. Many women — particularly solo agers — find themselves in this gap. Woven focuses on creating more attainable, community-based living options to address this unmet need.

  • Woven is intentionally designed to support women and women-centered housing solutions. Our programming and community-building efforts focus on the lived experiences of women who value safety, connection, and mutual support — particularly those navigating aging, housing affordability, and community without traditional support systems. At the same time, Woven complies fully with Fair Housing laws and does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion, family status, disability, or any other protected class. While our mission and network are women-centered, housing developed through Woven is inclusive and guided by applicable Fair Housing requirements.

  • Woven is not a single housing development. It is a national network and development support organization. Rather than promoting one specific housing type, Woven partners with members and municipalities to explore a range of development pathways and provides guidance throughout the early stages of community formation.

  • The Woven team actively supports the development of Woven communities. This includes assisting with land search efforts, exploring site feasibility, working with municipalities on zoning and regulatory pathways, and guiding groups through early development and organizational decisions. Woven’s role is to support, coordinate, and help move communities from vision to reality.

  • Woven communities are still in development, and no single housing model has been finalized. The Woven team is exploring a range of approaches — including modular construction, small-footprint homes, and other innovative and cost-effective building methods. Development decisions will be shaped by local context, affordability goals, zoning requirements, and community priorities.

  • Woven is working closely with municipalities across the West and Midwest to explore potential community locations. Specific sites and timelines will emerge as land opportunities, local partnerships, and regulatory pathways align.

  • No. Many people join Woven to learn, connect, and explore possibilities long before any housing decisions are made. Membership allows individuals to engage early, build relationships, and stay informed as Woven communities develop.

  • Members receive access to educational programming, practical resources related to community living, and opportunities to connect with others both nationally and regionally. Members also receive updates on active community development efforts and opportunities to participate as new Woven communities take shape.

  • Woven provides hands-on guidance during early-stage development. This includes supporting land search and site evaluation, helping explore development models, coordinating with municipal partners, and supporting community formation and decision-making. Woven remains engaged through these early, critical stages to help set communities up for long-term success.

  • Woven membership is offered through an affordable monthly subscription. There are no long-term commitments, and members may cancel at any time.

  • Members are invited to share their general location when joining. Woven facilitates regional connections through virtual gatherings, introductions, and shared learning opportunities as local interest grows.

  • All educational sessions are recorded and available on-demand, allowing members to engage on their own schedule.
